Three tips to help support your next career move

We recently caught up with Becky Teague, one of our People Programs & Talent Partners based out of Sydney. Read on to hear about her journey to date at Zip and her three top tips for those looking to take their career in new and exciting directions.

I joined Zip over 3 years ago in Talent Acquisition, transitioning from a recruitment agency background to a company that aligned with my values and passion for product-driven businesses. With experience in tech and design recruitment, Zip was a perfect fit.

After being promoted to Senior Talent Acquisition Partner in January 2023, I realised my career goals had shifted towards HR and People Program Development & Delivery.

Writing the next chapter of my story

With the support of People & Culture (P&C) leaders, I transitioned to a Senior People Programs and Talent Partner role in July 2023. My responsibilities now span People Program Delivery, People Partnering, and Talent Acquisition, at a regional and sometimes global level.

This broader role has allowed me to co-manage our global performance review, handle ER cases, launch various learning platforms for employee development, support competency framework creation, host Women in Tech forums and launch Zip's first ANZ Mentoring Program which is now an annual initiative, while continuing to manage recruitment for our Product portfolio.

Thinking about wanting to broaden your career experiences? Here are my three top tips to help support your potential career transition:

Network: Connect with people in your target field, ask what they enjoy and what challenges they face. Build relationships with professionals from other organisations to gain different perspectives on how they respond to changes in the sector. Attend industry events and, if possible, seek out a mentor—it’s been really valuable for me.

Learn and Research: Take advantage of online courses, webinars, podcasts, articles, and industry resources. Set aside time each week to deepen your knowledge and stay current in your chosen field. It helps that Zip provides various L&D programs along with platforms such as LinkedIn Learning and Udemy to support growth and development.

Don’t stay quiet: If you have an interest in a specific project or initiative that you’d like to work on, don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. Zip is a place where you will be empowered to take initiative and ‘Own It’ and develop your career in an environment where we all want to see each other succeed. As such, over 20% of all roles hired across ANZ in FY24 were filled by internal Zipsters.

Zip is a fast-paced business, things move quickly and you might find that you are working on things that put you outside of your comfort zone, which offers a huge advantage when it comes to learning new skills and career growth.

What does the next chapter of your story look like?

I can’t wait to be part of the next phase of Zip’s journey into the wider world of financial services! Time and time again our Zipsters come to the table with some incredible ideas and I'm excited to see what’s next for us and our customers.

I have grown a lot during my time at Zip and have learnt so much. When I first joined Zip I never thought my career would have pivoted into the direction it’s gone. It’s been a great experience so far and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens over the next three years.
