Zipsters celebrate Mardi Gras in Sydney
Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras event takes place from Feb 16 through March 3. Beyond the glitter, Mardi Gras has taken over Oxford Street annually since the late 70’s, originating as a protest for LGBTQIA+ rights. Since then, the parade has evolved into a symbol of resilience, freedom, and unity, drawing people from all over the world to join the festivities.
In the run up to the main event, we four asked members of our Zip Pride community pictured above from L-R; Joseph Aytekin (Customer Experience Specialist II), Spencer Murray (Customer Experience Specialist I), Edwina Paul (Associate Director, Customer Engagement) and Dylan Vorreiter (Customer Experience Specialist I) to share what Mardi Gras means to them. Here's what they had to say...
How have you personally been involved in events like Mardi Gras in the past and what did it mean to you to take part?
Dylan: I've celebrated Mardi Gras events all across the world! Mardi Gras reminds me that love has no borders and my community will always be there to support me.
Joseph: I've joined the parade for the last 3 years, I feel that it is our responsibility to come together, celebrate, and show how strong we are.
While Mardi Gras could often just be seen as a big party, why do you think an event like this is important?
Edwina: It’s a chance to collectively come together to recognise and celebrate the progress made in areas such as acceptance, empowerment and equal treatment and those that fought tirelessly to get us to this point while also acknowledging the work that remains. It’s also important to recognise the pivotal role it can play in providing a safe and embracing space for those who are new to the LGBTQIA+ community.
Dylan: Mardi Gras broadcasts the constant fight for equality in our community, providing an opportunity to challenge homophobic and transphobic legislation. It provides opportunities to showcase Queer voices, Queer history, and Queer art. Being actively involved in Mardi Gras events educates us on the individual experiences and stories within our community. Whether it's ballroom, drag story time, or Queer exhibitions, there are events for everyone!
How do you think allies can play a positive role in supporting events like Mardi Gras? What are some practical actions they can take?
Joseph: I have seen many allies joining the marching, contributing as volunteers, or just being there and having fun. It is so amazing to see their support, it makes our community feel stronger.
Spencer: When you aren’t afraid to be friends with and seen with Queer people, you are already being an ally. I also think using your straight privilege to stand up for your Queer friends when they experience injustice at the hands of prejudiced individuals is the ultimate form of allyship.
Edwina: Mardi Gras can be such a powerful moment, not just for the queer community but for everyone, to be able to come together to champion diversity and individual expression. There is absolutely strength in numbers and supporting the event by attending the parade itself or any of the lead-up events just helps people in the queer community know that are supported and celebrated for who they are
Looking to the Future in June Zip along with the rest of the world will be celebrating Pride month. What are some ways you would like to see Zipsters get involved?
Dylan: I would like to see Zip establish a Queer committee; a group that works to create a safer work environment for the LGBTQIA+ community. Further, for the month of June, Zip changing their logo to pride colours and finding Queer groups to collaborate with, will assist in Zip's CSR.
Spencer: What Dylan said! I would also love to see a Zip float in the parade itself. There are plenty of drag queens who work in CX (Customer Experience) who would love to be on a float. “Unzip your pride” could be the tagline!
Thanks for your contributions team - bring on Pride Month!
