Making takeoff easier—starting at checkout

Alternative Airlines connects travelers with over 600 global carriers, where flight bookings often come with significant upfront costs. While the company already offered multiple BNPL options, there was still an untapped opportunity at checkout. Some customers were reaching the final step but not converting, so Alternative Airlines needed a payment option that filled that gap.


The challenge

Alternative Airlines had invested heavily in flexible payments but still wasn’t capturing all available demand. Even with multiple BNPL providers in place, gaps remained. High-intent customers were reaching checkout but failing to use the multiple payment options before leaving.


The team needed a solution that could:  

  • Unlock true incremental performance, not cannibalize tenders

  • Reach customers their current payment stack was missing

  • Improve conversion on a wide range of booking values

  • Integrate seamlessly into an existing, multi-provider stack with minimal interruption


The solution


In January 2021, Alternative Airlines introduced Zip Pay in 4 at checkout through a Global SMI integration. Almost immediately, the organization saw growth in low- and mid-value bookings, suggesting the barrier for many customers wasn’t the total booking cost itself, but the need to pay the full amount upfront. These buyers simply needed a more flexible way to pay at checkout.


Following the success of Pay in 4, Alternative Airlines expanded their offerings to include Pay in 8, hoping to capture a broader range of booking values. Pay in 8 drove even greater growth for the business:


  • 158% MoM growth in customer share5
